Aeropress Brewing Method
The inventor of this brewing method wanted to come up with a way to brew a single cup of really good coffee without the bitterness you get from, say, a French press. That’s how the Aeropress was born. The name says it all: a method that uses air to push the coffee through the filter. The result: a simple way to brew sweet, full-bodied coffee. There are many alternative ways to brew coffee in the Aeropress, but since it’s a great brewing method that’s hassle-free (no scales, etc.)—perfect for on the go or for a quick cup of coffee—we use the “classic” brewing method.
What you need
- Aeropress set (including scoop)
- Aeropress filter
- Water that has just not boiled (220 ml)
- 17 grams of coffee medium finely ground / 1 generous Aeropress scoop
- Mug
- Timer
If you are on the road, to still have fresh ground coffee, you can also bring a hand grinder such as the Porlex grinder.
Step 1: Wet & Warm
The Aeropress consists of several parts. First, place the filter in the filter holder and rinse it with hot water. Next, wet and warm the cylinder and the plunger. Then place the filter holder on the cylinder. Don’t forget to preheat the mug as well.
Step 2: Pour & Wait
Put 17 grams of ground coffee into the chamber and shake it gently back and forth to level the coffee. Place the chamber with the coffee on top of the mug. Now carefully pour (over about 10 seconds) hot water over the coffee up to the number 4 mark on the side of the Aeropress. Stir the coffee briefly with the included stirring spoon and place the plunger on the chamber without pressing it down further. This prevents the coffee from starting to brew too early. Let the coffee steep for 1 minute.
Step 3: Pressing
After one minute, briefly remove the plunger from the carafe to stir one more time. Now place the plunger back on the carafe and press it down very slowly. The coffee is now being pressed through the filter into the mug. Stop pressing as soon as you hear a hissing sound. This prevents your coffee from becoming bitter.
Now you can enjoy quickly brewed, very tasty coffee
